Chairman’s Reflections on 2018/19 Season
Well, another season has come to an end, and I have reflected on what has been an eventful and memorable year.
It is really pleasing that we welcomed a number of new players to the club this year. Most joined from neighbouring districts looking for higher standards of competition. This year Steve Fox stood down as a player having been at the club for over 40 years and was one of the founding players that formed what is currently Horsforth following the merger of Featherbank and Oaktree in the 90’s. We wish Steve well and to recognise the contribution of both Steve Fox and Steve Binns to the club, have awarded both Steves’ honorary membership. We all look forward to continuing to see you both as spectators and in the Harewood Arms for many years to come.
We continued to field 9 teams with 4 men’s, 2 mixed and 1 ladies doubles representing the club in the Leeds District league and 2 Yorkshire league teams. It was another successful season with the highlights being the ladies team coming really close second in the ladies 1st division and the mixed A team coming 3rd in the 1st division. This is no mean feat with the top division becoming increasingly represented by county standard players.
The player of the season award was presented to Jamie Ellis whose performance across mens and mixed teams was absolutely standout. Well done Jamie!
It is with sadness that I reflect on the passing away of Mark Brown. Mark had represented the club for a great many years and I still find it hard to believe that he is no longer with us. He was an absolute gentleman and we will all miss him. To remember Mark, we are organising an annual charity match against Kippax at a date in September each year. We have also named our annual player award after him. Rest in peace Mark.
I am proud to be associated with Horsforth badminton club that provides the opportunity for players from a range of abilities to develop their game and play competitive badminton with a fun and sporting spirit. I look forward to next season.
Keep playing!
Geoff
